Classroom Observation Instruments Essay The following checklist it based off the Charlotte Danielson Framework. Teacher evaluations are based on four components or domains. Domain 1 is preparation and planning, domain 2 is classroom environment, domain 3 is instruction, and domain 4 is professional responsibility. When completing a classroom observation, only aspects of domain 2 and domain 3 are observable with a walk through. The following is an evaluation checklist of things a principal will look for while completing a classroom walk through. Sections marked with a (T) are teacher behaviors being observed, those marked with an (S) are student behaviors. Domain 2- Classroom Environment 1. Creating a classroom environment of respect and rapport (T) 2. Establishing a culture for learning (T) 3. Managing classroom procedures (T) 4. Management of student behavior (T) 5. Organizing physical space (T) 6. Work stations for group work (S) 7. Student desks are organized and material accessible (S) Additional notes on classroom environment: Domain 3 – Instruction 1. Communicating with students (T) 2. Use of questioning and discussion techniques (T) 3. Engaging students in learning (T) 4. Using assessment in instruction (T) 5. Demonstrate flexibility and responsiveness (T) 6. Whole class participation (S) 7. Student Engagement/on task behavior (S) 8. Confidence displayed in assessment (S) Additional notes on instruction: The above checklist is meant to be a guideline for principals to use during a walk through evaluation. Can you see the five aspects of each domain present in the classroom for teachers and the five for students? A simple yes or no will suffice. The above checklist is meant to be a guideline or springboard to complete next steps in the learning process. Those areas marked yes should be a cause for celebration. Evaluators and teachers can then discuss to what extent those aspects were present during the observation. In addition to the yes or no answers for each aspect of the two domains, an evaluator can write comments that fall within the domain descriptions as well. Are classroom procedures posted? That can be noted for classroom environment. What type of graphic organizer did the teacher use? That is part of an instructional strategy. The bottom part of the checklist allows the evaluator to add to the things he saw or did not see. This evaluation checklist should be copied and given directly to the teacher for reflection. That way the teacher has immediate feedback of what the principal observed in her classroom. This allows the educator to see what is being observed in her classroom and in her teaching. She can reflect on what aspects were not observed, adjust her teaching and include those aspects going forward. As much as it is a checklist for the evaluator, it can be used as a check-in for the teacher. If time allows, the principal should sit down and discuss the findings with the teacher, but time is not always available for this conference opportunity. This communication method would fall into a non-directive supervisory approach. Nondirective supervision involves the teacher being an essential part of the decision making process. While the teacher is reflecting and thinking through his actions for instructional improvement, the supervisor assists in this thinking and reflection process (Glickman Gordon, Ross-Gordon, 2008). This is shown through the principal giving feedback, but the teacher working out the next steps on her own. The positive aspect of this type of supervision includes the teacher feeling comfortable enough to ask their administrator for help when needed and feeling comfortable enough to take risks in their classrooms (Rettig, Lampe, and Garcia, 2000). 1.1 Describe the duties and responsibilites of own role My role is to ensure I treat all my clients as individuals, ensuring they always feel safe and at ease when I am around and doing my care, I make sure I read the care plan every day for each client to see if anything has changed since I have last been in there. I am responsible in making sure all my clients are looked after to a brilliant standard ensuring they are always happy with the care I provide for them, keeping them clean by doing personal care and assisting with needs if they need help such as, getting dressed, brushing teeth and combing hair treating the individual with respect and keeping their dignity at all times, ensuring they are eating and drinking properly and getting enough nutrition in their diet. If needed I will help individuals to administrate medication, prompting them if they do it theirselves so they don’t forget too. Keeping the surroundings clean and safe, making sure I tidy up after my self and my client so they are always in a hygenic surrounding desposing of things in the correct way, always wearing my protective clothing incase of cross contimation and encouraging them when I can ensuring they remain independant and empowered. It is my duty to report anything necessary to my manager, if my client is unhappy, if I feel my client is changing or becoming ill I make sure I inform my manager. Lastly I need to make sure I am up to date with all courses and training to make sure my clients are safe at all times and I am not using poor practice in my work place. 1.2 What standards influence your role as a carer and the way you carry out your duties There are many that influence my role such as: Care Standards Act 2000 Health & Safety At Work Act Manual Handling Operations Legislation Codes of Practice National Occupational Standards The Food Standards Act Whistle Blowing Control of Substances Hazardous to Health 1.3 Describe ways you ensure that personal attitudes or beliefs do not obstruct the quality of your work Firstly remember everyone is an individual and nobody is exactly the same as you, you may have an individual that has beliefs you do not believe in but you should keep this to yourself as its not fair on them to feel as though what they believe in is questioned or wrong and don’t let your own personal feelings get in the way of doing the job correctly and work in a way that supports their needs and beliefs. Try to understand the individual a little more, learning about their history and their beliefs letting them explain it to you this will help you to know alot more about them and make it easier to know their likes and dislikes because of the belief don’t judge the individual for believing in what they do only empathise with them and show you understand and that you respect them and their beliefs. 2.1 Explain why reflecting on practice is an important way to deve lop knowledge, skills and practice It’s important because you will develop more on the things you already know and learn and develop on the things you don’t know you will learn not to make mistakes you may have made in the past and you will learn where improvement is needed which will make you more effecient at the job role you do and alot more confident to do so in knowing how and when to use the skills you have picked up on and put them into practice. 3.1 What sources of support are available to you for your own learning and development? I can find sources of support inside the workplace and outside of the work place, inside the work place I have I have regular supervisions, this is followed by an observation of me in the work place, in the supervision meeting the senior member of staff will tell me how they think I am doing, telling me what I am doing right and also telling me how I could improve in my workplace and things I could work on to better how I am at work. There are also regular meetings so we can do new courses that have come in or renew courses we have already done so our knowledge is always up to date. Outside the work place I could go to the library to widen my learning ability in the workplace or I could do research on the internet. 3.2 Describe the process for agreeing a personal development plan You discuss with a senior member of staff who has watched you and you discuss your improvments that need to be made and proposals on how to meet those objectives and the activites that follows such as reviews and assesments which you both agree on.

An artwork which I found interesting was the double self-portrait she painted in 1939 during her divorce with Diego Rivera. This 68 by 68 oil on canvas self-portrait named The Two Fridas, interpreted her emotional pain experiences due to her divorce with Diego as stated earlier. According to Amy Stechler, the movie producer of The Life and Times of Frida Kahlo, there are specific main points which symbolize sadness and change in this artwork. In this self-portrait, Frida on the left is wearing a white European dress which indicates the new Frida whom Diego does not love anymore and shows her heritage which she inherits from both of her parents. The blood stains on her white dress are indications of everything that has to happen to her throughout her life such as surgeries, miscarriages and the mentally and emotionally loss of Diego. The Frida on the right who is wearing a traditional Mexican blouse and skirt symbolizes the Frida who is still in love with Diego. In this artwork, Frida on the right is holding a locket with a picture of Diego which represents how close she and Diego were Frida did not only see Diego as her lover but her child also. After Frida Kahlo died, this artifact was found in her possession and is now an artifact in the Museo Frida Kahlos Collection (Stechler, 2005). There were two other pieces of artwork which I found interesting they were two other self-portraits she titled Self-Portrait With Loose Hair and Self-portrait at the Border Between Mexico and the US. In the self-portrait in which she titled Self-Portrait With Loose Hair, she utilized the oil paint as her medium. The purpose I personally found this self-portrait interesting was because she barely painted self-portraits of herself with her hair loose. Her hair in this artwork was the main focal point since her long beautiful silky hair was her husband Diego Riveras admiration. There is also a script that she wrote on the painting in Spanish which translates as Here I painted myself I, Frida Kahlo, with my reflection on the mirror. I am thirty-seven years old y it is July of the year 1947. In Coyoacà ¡n, Mexico, the site where I was born in English. This artwork also seems to be a piece of artwork which reinforces her identity as a human since it mentions information about her. The last artwork which I admire is the self-portrait she titled Self-portrait at the Border Between Mexico and the US this portrait was based off when Diego was given an opportunity in working in the US, so both Frida and Diego migrated to the US which they ended up staying for approximately three years. However, Diego was enjoying his new life but Frida was not emotionally feeling the same as Diego did she truly missed her traditional Mexican roots where she came from. This painting has Frida Kahlo in the center, between the borderlines of Mexico and the US wearing a pink dress and holding a Mexico flag. The Mexico flag symbolizes loyalty, her loyalty and her love for her country Mexico. The factories and skyscrapers in the background represent the US side which symbolizes industrialization due to the new technological advancements. The left side of her painting includes vibrant colors and an Aztec site which represents her traditional roots from where she was born and raised.
